There is an ever-increasing demand for contact lenses ever since they were invented, as they not only improve a person’s vision, but also add to the style. Available in a variety of colors and options, contact lenses are preferred by many over the regular eye glasses. While buying a new pair of contact lenses, you must see an eye-care professional and get the prescription for contact lenses after thorough eye checkup. Other things to consider are the color, style and type of contact lenses.
There are basically two main types of contact lenses – soft and hard contact lenses. Let’s see how hard contact lenses are different from soft contact lenses. They vary in many aspects. Few of them are discussed below:
- Material: The foremost difference between hard and soft contact lenses is based on the material that is used to create them. Initially hard contact lenses were made of glass, but now, semi-rigid gas permeable, which is a sort of plastic, is used to make them. These lenses are made to adjust to the cornea of the wearer’s eye. Whereas, the soft lenses are constructed out of a very flexible plastic and can also be turned inside out. If these lenses are worn inside out, they may harm the eyes of the wearer.
- Durability: The hard lenses are much durable than soft lenses because they do not tear off easily as soft lenses. Common impurities like soaps, lotions etc. are not easily blotted by hard lenses even if they come in contact with wearer’s eyes. The soft lenses on the other hand, absorb these impurities very easily. This leads to a buildup and the lens becomes ineffective eventually. This problem is resolved only by replacing the lens. Soft lenses can also cut easily and therefore, require to be handled very gently and carefully.
- Vision Correction: Although, both of the lenses are great for vision correction, hard contact lenses are considered to be much better for the job. These lenses are made to fit the eye of an individual and therefore, it also controls the growth of nearsightedness. Soft lenses, can correct other vision problems like farsightedness, and astigmatism, besides nearsightedness.
- Comfort: The wearer of hard contact lenses often complains about being uncomfortable after wearing the lens. A breaking in period is also required for wearing hard lenses. This process has to be repeated if the lenses are not worn regularly. Soft lenses are easily molded to fit the wearer’s eye so that the wearer can easily get use to wearing lenses. Moreover, the high water content of these lenses makes them more comfortable for the eyes.

Our eyes are very sensitive and need special protection and care from the harmful rays or dirt. It is important to do proper eye exercising, along with regular check up ensures the longetivity of the eye vision.
The middle part of the eyes, called the uvea or the uveal tract, mainly comprise of three parts
- Iris is the colored part of the eye which acts as a diaphragm and controls the amount of light that enters the eyes. It lies between the cornea and the lens.
- Ciliary body is that part of the eye which lies between iris and choroid. It holds the lens and accommodates the water/tear production.
- Choroid are the layers of blood vessels that are located between the sclera and the retina of the eye. They provide blood supply to the retina.
What is Uveitis?
Uveitis is referred to inflammation of the uvea or the uveal tract of the eye. The uvea is responsible for the transportation of the blood through veins and arteries, which is very important for the eye vision.
There are mainly four types of Uveitis, depending on the specific part of the uveal tract being affected. These types are:
- Anterior Uveitis: It is also known as Iritis. In this type of Uvetis, inflammation of iris takes place.
- Intermediate Uveitis: It is also known as cyclitis. In this type the ciliary body of the uveal tract suffers inflammation. It also may affect the muscle that focuses the lens.
- Posterior Uveitis: It is also known as choroiditis as the inflammation of the choroid of the uvea takes place.
- Diffuse Uveitis: It is the inflammation of retina and swelling happens in most of the areas of uvea. It is also known as retinitis or panuveitis.
Uveitis and its various forms can be caused due to many reasons. It may be caused from a viral infection or the infection from fungus, bacteria or parasite. It usually happens to the middle-aged people, but small children are also easily infected. If your eyes are light sensitive and suffer from eye pain or irritation, get your eyes checked urgently. Eye floaters or blurred vision is also symptom of Uveitis.
It is important to get your eyes diagnosed and treated immediately if you come across any inflammation or swelling inside your eyes. Retinoschisis can be termed as an eye disease which can be characterized by abnormal splitting of the retina's neurosensory layers. If left unattended it can result in vision loss. Though Retinoschisis can be termed as a form of macular degeneration, it can be further divided into four types.
- Degenerative Retinoschisis – Though it is not a genetically inherited condition, Degenerative Retinoschisis is often confused with Retinal Detachment and should be attended by an expert eye doctor. It has been found in upto 7% of normal human beings.
- Hereditary Retinoschisis - This is a less common disease and is believed to occur one in every 5,000 to 25,000 individuals. As the name suggests it is an inherited disease often inherited by men from their unaffected carrier mothers. It is believed to be caused by an X-linked genetic defect, affecting the vision of men. However, very few men are said to go blind due to this disease. Hereditary Retinoschisis causes tiny cysts in the retina which can be detected by an expert.
- Tractional Retinoschisis - This disease is said to cause traction on the retina especially at the macula.
- Exudative Retinoschisis – It affects the central part of retina, secondary to optic disc pit. Exudative Retinoschisis is believed to cause substantial vision loss. Treatments like Laser Photocoagulations, Vitrectomy and Gas Injection are believed to be effective in this form of Retinoschisis.
Causes
Genetic birth defect is the only known cause of Retinoschisis.
Symptoms
- Decreased vision
- Loss of peripheral vision
- Division of retina
- Vision defect
- Occurring disintegration of retina
- Inability to see clearly in bright light.
Treatment
- Someone who is nearsighted or farsighted can use spectacles to improve the overall quality of vision however this cannot repair the nerve tissue damage.
- Even though Vitamin A is quite helpful in case of genetic retinal diseases but it has little effect on retinoschisis.

In comparison to spectacles, most athletes prefer wearing contact lenses for vision correction. This can really help in providing clear vision during competitive activities. On the field, every athlete strives for peak performance and hence, wants to optimize visual skills.
Basically, athletes need to ensure three things for excellent performance:
- Contrast Sensitivity – This allows you to view fine details from a distance.
- Dynamic Visual Acuity – This maintains clarity of vision during slow or fast movement so that you see every obstacle.
- Flexible Focus – As objects move nearer or farther from you, you must be able to keep them in sharp focus.
For sports enthusiasts as well as professional players, contact lenses offer a more natural vision enhancement than eyeglasses. For protection, you can wear sunglasses over them. There are various advantages of sports vision lenses, as listed below:
- While prescription eyeglasses have small, flat lenses and frames, sports vision contact lenses cover the entire eye and provide better peripheral vision.
- Using contact lenses allows athletes to enjoy an unobstructed view of the surroundings and objects coming towards them or other players.
- In contrast to eyeglasses, there is no problem of fogging up of contact lenses. This allows you to play without worrying about the weather, dust, rain, etc.
- A hard hit may break your eyeglasses and lead to serious eye injuries but contact lenses are less prone to damage.
- There is no strain or vision disturbance when you wear sports vision lenses. This is a problem faced by athletes who wear eyeglasses during aggressive playing.
A lot of people use daily disposable contact lenses that can be worn for a game and thrown away after that. For cold weather, athletes and players who keep their eyes open without blinking, GP contact lenses are a good option. Before you choose any sports vision lenses, give thought to the kind of sport you play and its visual requirements.
Even people who play sports in their leisure time or at school may need to consider such lenses and weigh its benefits in comparison to eyeglasses. To get the best advice, you must visit a sports vision specialist or your eye doctor.

Maintaining good vision is more than just buying the right prescription contact lenses. You have to take care of them to avoid long term damage to your eyes. Like other synthetic materials, contact lenses are prone to deposit of dust particles and microorganisms. These have to be regularly removed and should be cleaned to ensure comfort in visibility.
In order to kill the microorganisms that lead to eye infections, you must disinfect the contact lenses. Eye specialists recommend medically approved solutions to store contact lenses. Re-wetting drops can also be used to remove dryness from lenses. Apart from cleaning of the contact lenses, you need to disinfect and replace the case to prevent infections.
During application, it is essential to wash your hands and avoid soaps that contain oily ingredients. These may stick to the surface of contact lenses and lead to irritation in the eyes. Sometimes, the lenses get stuck in the case. Soak it in solution and gently shake it loose. Remember that the lenses have to be rinsed thoroughly with appropriate solution before and after application.
For women, it is important to take precautions while using contact lenses. Put them in before you start applying make-up and try using non-allergic, natural products only. This makes sure that your contact lenses remain comfortable. You can go for cream eye shadow instead of powder products or water-based creams rather than oil-based ones. Similarly, removal of makeup needs to be done before taking off the lenses.
Using tap water to clean contact lenses can be very harmful. It contains minerals, chlorine and metal particles that can be disastrous to your eyes. Even distilled water or home-made saline could cause irreversible damage to your lenses. The use of prescribed solution is the best way to ensure proper disinfection of contact lenses and clarity of vision.
