Vital Eyecare Tips

by Administrator 6. December 2010 14:06

Eyes are regarded as the windows of soul and are the most important organs of our body. They are also quite sensitive and can be easily damaged if proper and consistent care is not taken. Vision related problems are quite common these days apart from other ailments like infections, soreness, etc. These infections can over time even take the form of dangerous diseases that may result in blindness. However, if you take appropriate measures to help ensure that your eyes remain in good condition, you can enjoy a healthy eye sight over a lifetime. Some of the tips that should be kept in mind are:

  • It is important to purchase good quality sunglasses to be worn when you need to venture out into the sun. This is because the sun’s rays can be quite harmful to your eyes especially in summer and may cause damage to your cornea with prolonged exposure. You should also take care not to look at the sun directly under any circumstances especially during a solar eclipse or you may put yourself at risk of being permanently blinded.
  • In case you wear glasses or contact lenses in order to see clearly, you must get your eyes checked on an regular basis in order to determine whether your number remains the same or has changed. You should wear glasses whenever possible, especially while watching television or reading or you may subject your eyes to strain. If you wear contact lenses, you must make it a point not to wear them over the prescribed period of 10 to 12 hours. Also, they must be removed before you go to sleep every night and kept in the solution provided for this purpose. The case in which they are kept should be kept sanitary to avoid infections.
  • If you find that something has gone in your eye, you should never rub them vigorously no matter how much it may itch. Instead, you should dab your eyes with water that has been boiled or is clean.
  • You should remove all eye makeup before you go to bed. Natural oils like olive oil can be used to remove mineral based makeup effectively.

Tips On Eye Gear Maintenance

by Administrator 26. October 2010 11:50

Eyes are one of the important organs of the body. They are sensitive and precious organs for which you need to take care. If they are not taken care in a proper manner, then you can suffer from various problems associated to your eyes. Your eyes are required to be protected from any kind of viral infections as well as from other external attacks especially when you have a weak eye sight. To protect your eyes or for vision improvement, it is therefore, recommended to wear spectacles and contact eye lenses. Contact lenses and spectacles are primarily been manufactured to help the people to correct the vision. There are mainly two types of vision errors which a person can suffer. They are near sightedness and far sightedness. With the help of the spectacles and contact lenses, these errors can be corrected.

It is very important to take care of your contact lenses and spectacle. Always remember to use a protective case to store your lenses or spectacles when you are not using them. While storing the spectacles, make sure that the glasses are kept in the upside direction, which would prevent the glasses from getting scratches. After usage, remember to wash your glasses with warm water and use a soft and clean cotton cloth to wipe them. If you are using contact lenses, you need to be more careful. The contact lenses are usually being stored in special solution. Always keep them moist and use a special lenses cleaning solution to clean them. Wear the contact lenses before you apply makeup and remember to remove these lenses before you go to sleep. Since contact lenses stay more close to the eyes, you need to be very careful while using them and keep them away from any kind of contamination.

Contact lenses and spectacles are used for fashion as well as to help you to have proper vision. However, if they are not being maintained properly, they can cause irritation or infection and can prove to be harmful for the eyes. You may even loose your vision. So take care of your lenses and get the most of them.

  • Wash them regularly in warm water and then wipe with a clean and soft cotton cloth. Using paper can scratch the lenses.
  • Always keep your glasses, with lenses in the upside direction, these should be never in tough with the surface as the contact can put scratches on lenses.
  • Protective cases should be used to store your spectacles when not in use.
  • While wearing them on, use both your hands to make them fit well.

Using recommended contact lenses is another option for individuals who have vision problems. Contact lenses help you in maintaining your eye number and also give you a better look. These are available in variety of colors, and are distinguished as hard or soft contact lenses. Since eye lenses are closest to an eye, thus needs much maintenance and care.

  • Contact lenses should be regularly clean and for cleaning purpose, special lenses cleaning solutions should only be used.
  • Always try to keep them moist.
  • Make sure to remove them from your eyes before sleeping.
  • Always wear them before applying makeup.

How Our Eyes Work

by Administrator 20. September 2010 09:44

Eyes are an important organ in humans. With help of eyes, a person or a living being can see and interpret different objects. We are blessed to have eyes, else, we would have been in area of darkness and would have never been able to see any object on the earth. The functioning of eyes can be compared with that of a camera. However, eyes, a beautiful gift of the nature have its own functionality.

To explain how our eyes work, let us first understand various parts of eyes. The eyes consist of cornea which is a transparent outer covering and lies at the front of the eyes. The next part of the eye after the cornea is Iris. In Iris, there is a black hole called pupil through which the light rays pass through. Behind the pupil, there is a lens which passes the light through and at the back of the eye is retina (a thin tissue), where the images that we see are formed.

The process of vision starts when a light ray reflected from an object at which an individual looks, enter eyes through Iris. The light ray passes through pupil which constantly opens and closes to regulate the amount of light that can be passed through. The light rays then pass through lens which modifies itself to focus light on retina. The function of the eye is similar to a camera and the pupil can be compared with the aperture of the camera, in dark conditions, pupil widens whereas, in bright light, the pupil contracts.

If the light is not focusing correctly on the retina, it causes blurred vision. This particular condition is called a refractive error. A refractive error is an optical correction because of which the person is not able to view objects correctly. This results in short sightedness and far sightedness in the person. The refractive errors can be corrected by using spectacles, contact lenses or through surgery.

Taking Care Of Your Eyes

by Administrator 30. August 2010 13:07

Eyes are the most sensitive part in the body. Any problem or infection in the eyes can lead to severe consequences. Often ignorance leads to darkness. In the case of eyes, this proverb holds value. Any ignorance shown for treatment of eye infections can lead to severe consequences such as squint or permanent loss of sight. In order to avoid these problems, on must adopt a healthy lifestyle and follow proper exercising routine. On must prevent reading in the absence of proper light that severely affects the eyes.

Cataract is one such problem of the eyes that need proper care and treatment. The cataract can form in any three layers of the lens of the eyes. Cataract is usually associated with long term swelling or inflammation in the eyes. The most noticeable symptoms of the cataract are worsening of vision or blurred vision. One can also experience the diming of colors, inability to cope up with bright lights or sunshine, and weakening of the eyesight. One must certainly plan to check with an eye specialist if the vision gets worsened gradually.

Individuals developing cataracts are devoid of sharp vision. As the cataracts grows and develops further in the eyes, it allows less light to enter the eyes and form an image on the retina. The individual’s ability to read, drive, see the faces clearly, sew, cook, or a number of other activities get affected. Often the cataract patients can even see halos formed around the source of lights. Usually the far sight gets more affected than the near sight, yet cataract is harmful for night driving.

The cataracts can surely be prevented. Proper eyecare, healthy diet schedule, avoiding fatty foods, and exercising regularly are some of the ways in which one can reduce the risk of cataracts. One must wear special sunglasses that actually block the harmful rays from entering the eyes. The sunglasses must always be worn, when one plans to move out in the sun. Children must particularly be sure to use the sunglasses as their eyes are more prone to catch infections.

Thus proper eyecare helps to prevent various infections related to eyes.

Exercising Tips For Proper Eyecare

by Administrator 7. June 2010 15:33

Those who constantly work in front of the computer are bound to suffer from a variety of eye diseases in the long run. Nowadays, it has become unimaginable to have perfect vision and healthy eyes. Still, it is possible with a good exercising routine and quality lifestyle.
While prescription glasses and contact lenses help in vision correction, certain exercises are also essential to get effective results. Listed below are easy exercises for making your vision better and keeping your eyes healthy.

  • Find a comfortable chair and sit on it. Rub your hands together and cover your eyes with cupped palms. Make sure that your nose remains uncovered and no pressure is applied on the eyeballs. Place your hands in a way that light does not enter the eyes and there are no gaps between fingers or between the palms and the nose. With closed eyes, you need to imagine blackness and focus on it. Visualize a scene or peaceful incident while taking deep breaths. Once you see deep blackness, remove the palms from your eyes and repeat the process for 3 minutes.
  • Shut your eyes tightly for three to five seconds and then open them for the same amount of time. This exercise must be repeated 7 to 8 times.
  • Massage your eyes with circular movements of your hands for 1 to 2 minutes. You must press closed eyes lightly to avoid hurting the eyeballs.
  • On your upper eyelids, press three fingers of each hand and hold the position for 1-2 seconds before releasing them. This exercise has to be repeated 5 times.
  • In a sitting posture, relax your body and then roll your eyes. This has to be done clockwise and counter-clockwise, 5 times. Between each time, you can blink your eyes.
  • Find a place about 6 inches from a window and make a mark on the glass at eye level. Now, you must focus on some far away object for 10-15 seconds through the mark on the window.
  • At arm’s length, hold a pencil and move your arm towards your nose. While doing this, keep your eyes focused on the pencil. Repeat this exercise 10 times.
  • Up and down eye movements are also a good eye exercise. This can be done 8 times, starting from up to down. Similarly, you can move the eyes from left to right.

Following these exercising tips for eyes can help you with eye strain and prevent diseases related to eyes.

Healthy Lifestyle For Eyecare

by Administrator 24. May 2010 15:59

If you want to retain the health and wellness of your eyes, it is very important to eat the proper foods containing essential vitamins and minerals. People with bad eating habits are prone to get eye diseases much more easily than health conscious ones.

One of the best ways to reduce the risk of eye problems is to enhance the amount of antioxidants in your meals. These are good for protecting your heart, eyes and even the immune system. Major antioxidants like Vitamin C, E and A help in avoiding eye disorders like cataract, macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Mainly, the natural sources of antioxidants include vegetables and fruits, especially with high pigmentation. You must buy fruits and vegetables with more color and eat them raw to gain maximum benefits. However, too much intake of antioxidants can also lead to problems.

Doctors often recommend Vitamin A for keeping your eyes healthy. This can be found in eggs, fruits and vegetables. Milk also contains good amount of Vitamin A. Its proper consumption ensures appropriate functioning of retina and prevents night blindness. Vitamin A also helps in delaying age-related cataract and macular degeneration.

Apart from Vitamin A, you can also strengthen your eyes with proper consumption of Vitamin C. Its multiple benefits include stronger bones and muscles, better immunity, healthier teeth and good vision. Usually, Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, strawberries, sweet potatoes, broccoli, orange juice and green peppers. Consuming a high amount of Vitamin E can also aid in minimizing the risk of eye diseases like cataract. This can be easily found in green vegetables, cereal and nuts.

Minerals are just as important as Vitamins for maintaining healthy eyes. The key minerals that promote oxidation include Zinc and Selenium. These help your body in absorbing antioxidants and preventing eye problems. Food products like cheese, red meat, pork, yogurt and fortified cereal contain Zinc while Selenium is present in rice, enriched breads, walnuts, cheese and macaroni. Make sure that you get the right quantity of minerals in your diet so that your eyes remain healthy.

Dealing With Macular Hole

by Administrator 26. April 2010 12:18

Macula, present in the center of the retina, is a light-sensitive tissue in the eye. When a small break occurs in the macula, it leads to condition referred as Macular Hole. Macular hole results in reduced central vision as a result ability to clearly see the fine details, read and drive without any vision problems is hampered. Usually, macular hole is a problem suffered by people over 60 years of age.

Macular hole results in distorted and blurred vision. This happens in various stages like:

Stage I – Foveal detachments
Stage II – Partial thickness holes
Stage III – Full thickness holes

In the absence of timely and proper treatment, macular hole can lead to further eye diseases or detached retina. However, it is important to remember that macular holes are not the same as macular degeneration due to increasing age. To know the detailed difference and recognize the symptoms correctly, take advice from an eyecare professional.

Basically, a macular hole is caused when the vitreous tears away from the retinal surface and creates the hole. Some fibers may also remain on the retina and increase tension as they contract. This is a common reason for macular hole. Moreover, the eye disorder may occur from nearsightedness, retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular pucker and certain eye injuries.

Once you have understood the causes of macular hole, it is essential to know the symptoms of this condition. Initially, you may notice a slight blurriness or distortion in vision. Objects with straight lines or edges may start looking bent and routine tasks become difficult to perform.

Treatment for macular hole ranges from simple precautions to surgery. Some macular holes can seal on their own while others need a surgical procedure called vitrectomy. The patient has to remain face-down for a day or two after the surgery. This position has to be adopted right after surgery and maintained till the hole gets sealed.

The success of surgery for macular hole differs from patient to patient. If you have been suffering from this problem for less than six months, the chances of vision recovery and improvement are much higher than people who have had macular hole for a long time.
